iPAD + Serato

450-iserato
Will this happen? As someone who has spent a decade using turntables and ~5 years using Serato with turntables, I’ve been tempted to go to using CDJs (again). Not because i want to use CDs specifically, but because of the simplicity of the process of hooking them up with no ground wires… and no needle wear.

ITCH and other lil tablet djing packets just seems like toys. But I’m feeling different about the idea of DJing on an iPAD or something like it. I’m tired of running through turntable needles just to play digital files. I’ll keep my turntables at home for use with actual records, and bring out my CDJ (or iPAD?) and do the job, allowing me to focus on the music and not whether my ground wire is connected and my tonearm is properly weighted.

The iPAD was announced today. I immediately thought of using it to DJ. I’m excited to do so, whenever that happens.

Select tracks, cue them, and use your fingers to scratch them in… just like on any other turntable simulated device. This will require Serato to upgrade the software and include a way to “scratch” songs to play, on screen, but that should be do-able easily. Just add a built in mixer with 3 band EQ and crossfader. In the process, this will open up the world of DJing even more with yet another way to cue and play songs. Skills are skills. Experienced DJs can tell who knows what. DJs: Let technology run into the future, and jump aboard when you want to. Sooo, let me test one!! ;) =- Miles

UPDATE:

Upon further inspection, if this is possible at all, it seems it may take additional hardware (beyond standard serato box). And as DJ lil dave hit me on twitter about; How will a strong audio signal be accessible in addition to needing a headphone audio signal as well? I’m not sure.

If this ever does happen and extra accessories are necessary, they’d better be minimal because Serato already has enough necessary rca wires (if you don’t own a TTM 57SL) and I’m not looking to carry around a bunch more. We’ll see. It may be a no go. It’s all good. I just stay open minded. My life is a brainstorm. On to the next… respect

Newer UPDATE: April 2010

  • ipad is now out and for what it’s worth this is out too
  • I’ve received an amazingly sad amount of negative contacts from folks who come off like inexperienced whiny youngsters who think they are helping the vinyl cause by being hateful against the idea of not using it. Please consider that you’re actually doing the culture a disservice. Wanting to standing for “real hip hop/dj” culture does not involve threats and anger. Immaturity does. So calm down, I’ve been there. If you want to get your point across, do so in a way that engages people positively.  But do you. Im not an ipad fan… but simply enjoy new ideas. respect
  • This is the most comprehensive and positive update I’ve received.. so I’m sharing it…“Miles, good post man. If you google “serato ipad”, this is one of the only things about it anywhere. I think this would be super doable. It IS possible to connect devices via USB on the ipad (rane), its just a proprietary jack that you need a converter to usb for. With that the case, there is no reason why they can’t cram serato into the ipad. I was running it on a 800mhz POS Powerbook, and it performed just fine. The ipad already has more power than that. I’ll never give up vinyl feel, which is why i love serato so much, but if i can get new tech on vinyl feel… sign me up.” – Ben (thanks Ben – Miles)

I don’t actually own Serato but I know all about it and am looking to get it. I used my ipod touch and an app called TouchDJ to have a little mix on the tube with my tunes. It’s good fun but you could never play out with it! I think if the ipad can replace the laptop side of things in a regular Serato setup, it would be a real sick idea! You could then keep all your tunes on that. They could make a new bit of hardware that holds the ipad like a docking station, that also has the standard Serato box and a DAC built in to output high quality audio. Then, it could have an on-the-move mode, to let you mix it up on screen when you want to travel light. Then everyone is happy!
PS Always love a visionary post. props
