(SoundsGood was the 2-man group I was a part of from 2001-2006, we left an impression on people. I made all of the beats. This was before I was known as a singer.)
I’m sitting here, listening to the “new” soundsgood album. Putting the tracks in order. I hear them in a new way. the lyrics of Joe Good are no longer “what he did over my beat” as they had been when the music was newly being made. Now I hear Joe Good the man in the midst of his personal struggle to give his best while feeling less than accomplished in gaining the recognition he may have felt he (and we, as a group) deserved.
Maybe he was right.
After all, he proceeded to change his presentation format, opting to seek other types of music fans by presenting the more aggressive side of his artistry. He gained what he wanted to achieve; successfully earning the respect of Kansas City hip hop fans (largely the west-coast influenced rap fans) who viewed his work SoundsGood as light-weight, jazzy, goofy, not to mention lacking in bass. That was a reflection on me being a producer whose ear was developed on the East Coast where bass wasn’t a goal. In headphones bass isn’t a factor the way it is in the west-coast car-centric culture.
More later…
