I grew up listening to WGBO.
In my dad’s car, and at his woodshop while he worked on custom furniture (normally for the rich folks around northern NJ). I’d hang out sometimes during the day, and occasionally lend a hand staing a few boards or doing what liked most.. sanding.
I’m listening as i write this… over the internet to Michael Bourne, their primary voice and one that was around during and well before my listening as a kid in NJ.
I learned about Jazz. I learned that I love jazz, while listening to that station. Plus it was a nice accompaniment to our long father-son drives at night to one of his gigs in the area. Late nights, BMW 2002 (that is the model, not the year), maybe dad’s cigar, some late night food, my tired-arse, and wbgo.
I think many young people feel weird discussing jazz, as if we dont know enough to speak on it. Have no worries, just enjoy. wbgo. I love that it’s focus is on REAL jazz, classic, but sometimes experimental jazz, not too light.. just good. There’s no shame in that.
